Dr. Schmidt graduated with a B.S. majoring in Biochemistry from Missouri Southern State University in 2008.  He attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry from 2008-2012.  While in dental school he received a Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Navy and upon graduation entered active duty. 

Dr. Schmidt’s first tour was at the prestigious Walter Reed National Military Medical Center/National Capital Consortium during the height of the War in Afghanistan.  In his second tour from 2013-2016, Dr. Schmidt served as a General Dentist with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Dental Battalion, in Camp Lejeune, NC.  He then received additional training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth from 2016 to 2020.  After, a one-year ship tour aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN69) as the ship’s sole Max/Face surgeon, he returned to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth as the Assistant Program Director where he was involved in the training of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residents and General Practice Residents.  He has numerous military awards and decorations. 

Dr. Schmidt has extensive training in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including general anesthesia, corrective jaw surgery (Orthognathic Surgery), TMJ reconstruction, Facial Cosmetic Surgery, Pathology and Reconstruction, Facial Trauma, as well as tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, and rehabilitation with dental implants.  He was board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2022 and selected as a Fellow by the American College of Surgeons in 2024. 

Dr. Schmidt is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. 

Dr. Schmidt is married to his wife, Mindy.  Mindy has spent more than 20 years as an Emergency Room Nurse.  She has a passion for horsemanship and enjoys cooking and traveling.  They have 3 daughters, Alivia, Madelyn, and Mia Rose.
